The Icelandic Government and The National Power Company of Iceland, Landsvirkjun Power
Project: 2021

Retained by the Icelandic government and the National Power Company of Iceland, Yorth Group created a conceptual design for a circular economic industrial park that utilizes waste, air pollution, and byproducts from a silica plant and converts them to value within the local economy.

This work led to a second and related development project on Iceland’s west coast where Yorth developed a vision and design for a circular economic community that consists of heavy and light industrial and commercial operations within habitat and residential areas.

Deliverables for initial project:

  •  A five-phased approach

    • Phase 1 - emission capture: converting CO2 emissions to methanol and diverting waste heat to fish farms and greenhouses

    • Subsequent phases included: further integration with other industry and municipal waste products and materials that are used to generate green and blue infrastructure; fueling commercial activities, research, and laboratories; and stakeholder education

For Yorth Group, these projects emphasize the challenges that countries and regions that are already green and closer to net-zero are facing in times when demands for resources are increasing at an unprecedented rate, and when infrastructure development can no longer be separated from economic development. A major takeaway is the critical importance of engagement and communication to success.
